Tommy Bentz Tourby Honeyboy Amps / January, 2018

I heard that the Tommy Bentz Band from the USA were playing some Scottish dates so I dropped Tommy a line to see if he wanted to try a Honeyboy 18. He gigged one at the Blues Burst festival in Glasgow, and was so impressed he asked if he could borrow one for their autumn UK tour. I dropped of the amp at the Howlin’ Wolf in Glasgow and picked it up 8 gigs later at the Callander Jazz & Blues Festival, and at both gigs Tommy’s blues rock tone was awesome. For both the bar gigs I was at, Tommy simply played through the amp with no mic’ing or line-out to the PA and it had plenty of volume with lots more to spare. Tommy loved using the amp, and the bass player and drummer were fans too. I asked Tommy what he liked about the amp once they were back home in the states and he wrote “Thick vintage Fenderesque tones, but with a clarity and depth to go from gritty rhythmic bite to soaring creamy leads with an organic feel and dynamic response that guitarist dream about”.
